It might seem a bit obvious to say that fencing wire is a fundamental part of wire fencing. However, it’s worth stressing that not all wire fences are the same. The basic options include strands of wire, known as running wires, that run parallel to one another between posts. These strands can be plain, barbed or in a specialist form such as razor wire.
The major alternatives to running wires are chain-link or mesh. Chain-link consists of a hook and link system, which creates a strong, cost-effective, low-maintenance barrier. Wire can be woven, knotted, or welded, as in the case of galvanised welded mesh. It, too, is affordable, as its high tensile strength means it can be installed on difficult sites while keeping post use to a minimum.
The effectiveness of any wire fencing is dependent on the tension of the wire, which is stretched from post to post, or across a frame in the case of a fence panel. The ability of a wire to withstand a pulling force is known as its tensile strength, which is measured, for example, in pounds per square inch.
Wire fences, such as those made from galvanised wire netting, for instance, are a popular choice for keeping stock safely enclosed. Different species require different sizes and designs of wire, though, so the needs of the equestrian will be different from those of the smallholder who keeps sheep and goats. Barbed wire works well for cattle, but not usually for animals such as pigs or sheep.
Rolls of wire are the best option for long distance fencing, whether it's needed to enclose animals or create the highest security barrier for an airfield perimeter. Betafence wire is available in an extensive range of sizes, plus specialist galvanised and coated finishes, so it is very durable and needs little maintenance.
Wire is a versatile product. It can control herds of animals or be used to create a decorative gabion basket. Best of all, working with netting and wire usually requires only standard tools.
